Recorded at the Nola Penthouse Studio in New York City on 17 and 18 June 1963 and originally released on Argo Records, The Great Day finds James Moody in spectacular company. Arranged and conducted by Tom McIntosh, the lineup reads like a jazz dream — trumpeters Thad Jones and Johnny Coles, flautist Hubert Laws, guitarist Jim Hall, bassist Richard Davis, and drummer Mel Lewis. This was actually the first documented studio encounter between Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, adding extra historic sparkle to an already fantastic record. Moody glides between flute, alto, and tenor with effortless brilliance throughout.
